The Marina Roy Hair School is a Moscow based training academy dedicated to all aspects of hairstyling. It was founded last year by Marina Roy, a hairstylist not short on creative outlets – as well as being an ambassador for TIGI Russia, she is the hairstylist behind The Art Of Hair an ongoing personal project between Roy and photographer Albert Plehov, which she describes as “my own story as an artist and hair architect, my source of energy”.
Led by Roy, the team behind the school consists of eight hairstylists, each with different skills and expertise. “We all work across different spheres,” Roy explains, “doing hair for theatre and cinema, glossy editorial shoots, teaching hairdressing courses, working with celebrities, participating in fashion shows…”
Roy explains that the school adopts a very hands-on teaching approach to hair, far removed from a rigid classroom style of education. “We don’t ‘teach’ people, we describe our aesthetics. We show people how we do hair with our hands and share our way of thinking that way.”
With over 20 different courses ranging from a ‘Basic Brushing Course’ to ‘Architecture and the Shape’, the team sets out to arm their students not just with a solid set of skills but with the confidence to use their imagination to push themselves both commercially and creatively. “Our philosophy is to maintain the harmony,” Roy says, “the rest is the choice of the artist!”
