ART + CULTURE: Delicately exposing the human desire for touch and communal care across occupation, age, and gender, Cihan Öncü’s photos catalogue the universal delight of the salon wash

For the past 7 months, photographer Cihan Öncü has been documenting the bliss of the washbasin. “Every week, I go to a specific hairdressing salon, meet people and take their portraits while getting their hair washed, portraying them in their most innocent, sincere and comfortable moments.” After shooting this project for a while, Cihan discovered the concept of A.S.M.R.–autonomous sensory meridian response–and realised that it perfectly described the sensory release the customers felt after the intimate experience. A daily task for hairdressers, the wash is one of the most important parts for customers, who usually experience a head-to-toe sensation of relaxation during the gentle process of caring touch. A once-in-a-while experience, whether the customer is a busy businesswoman, a young boy, or retiree, “getting a head massage releases a circuitry throughout the body that puts the person into this relaxed and mindful moment of contemplation.”
