EDITORIAL: Anthony + Pat Mascolo collaborate with performance artist Bre Lembitz in exploring recurring and haunting hairdresser truths

We are at first dramatically made aware that nature so often overpowers our attempts at control. Elemental forces can easily transform us – whether willing participant or not. After the transformative storm seems to wash away her beautiful inky dark look, a curious rainbow is revealed – a vibrant finish of super saturated hues. The emotional impact and cultural efficacy of colour in hair is impossible to ignore. If you work with part colour blindness, as Anthony does, the best colours are strong colours!

By allowing the end look to be defined by colour in wet hair Anthony also seeks to celebrate colourists, and their clear contribution in the construction of a final look. Bre’s primal movements and ecstatic engagement with both the forces within and surrounding her leave the audience with further questions. Did we witness an elemental transformative process or just glimpse part of a more sophisticated metamorphosis… are the final frames the end? Or a colourful chrysalis with more to come?

Anthony and Pat worked with filmmaker Michael Lindsay in the creation of eXoChromatic, a near perfect alignment between still photography and motion photography. This is best illustrated by taking stills from motion footage and this is what you see here… moments grabbed from an almost infinite stream of frames. Since all the frames you see are within the film what is left is also a meditation on the formal differences between motion and the printed page.
