ART + CULTURE: The inhabitants of Amazonian Pot-krô village give INFRINGE an insight into their hair tradition

Words: Katharina Lina

Special Thanks to Pot-krô village & Clarissa Mattos

Earlier this year, INFRINGE visited the Pot-krô village in the Amazon rainforest, the inhabitants of which are a part of the indigenous Kayapó people, or as they refer to themselves, the Mebêngôkre nation. The aim was to go and learn about their distinctive hairstyles and incredible traditional hair customs. Initially as well as the documentary video and photographic hair images, we wanted to write an accompanying article that supported both the very complex experience of the visiting INFRINGE team as well as the concerns raised by some of the Kayapó people we talked to, about threat to the preservation of traditional Kayapó culture. Unfortunately there were irreconcilable opinions about how to share their story in the most honest and ethical way. Taking into consideration the current political climate in Brazil, the continuous disturbances of the jungle in the name of Western consumerism, and even the devastating recent fires, we decided against the article delving into some of these issues and how they affect indigenous life, and instead simply present the video and photos we took. Click here and here to find different ways in which you can help the Amazon.
