LOCKDOWN TALES: Session stylist Louis Ghewy recreates his favourite pop culture hairstyles at home

Hair + Photography: Louis Ghewy

Quarantined in his London flat, Louis Ghewy set out to recreate the hair looks that have inspired him over the years, starting with a style of special significance: Guido Palau’s arched do for Alexander McQueen’s SS10 show, Plato’s Atlantis. For Ghewy, it was a defining moment, prompting his move to London to pursue a career in hairstyling. “At the time I was a 17 year old living in Belgium, and I remember seeing the show online and being sucked into the fantasy. The hair Guido did for that show took the collection to another level. It’s rare these days that designers dare to go as full out.” Below, the hairstylist takes us through his latest creations.

“My take on probably one of the most iconic hairstyles in movie history – Rachael from Blade Runner”

“This is an interpretation of the Modern Dance album cover, a compilation album from 1981 with songs from The Cure, Visage, and The Human League.”

“Inspired by the irreplaceable Miss Joan Crawford.”

“I remember watching the movie Mars Attacks when it came out in 1996, as a 5 year old. After rewatching it during quarantine I played around with different kinds of padding to create a ‘head extension’ feeling.”

“Quarantine has gotten me into watching The Nanny again. I loved Grandma Yetta and Sylvia Fine’s hair, how it had this asymmetric flick to it.”

“I came across a Chanel campaign from 1994 where Nadja Auermann rocks this Marie Antoinette inspired hairstyle.”
