ART+CULTURE: Textile designer and barber Fleur Magenta Scott documents her journey to self-acceptance while dealing with hair loss
Collages, Headpieces + Artist Statement: Fleur Magenta Scott
Fleur Magenta Scott (aka friendliskinheaddesigns) is a textiles and fashion sculptor from London, as well as a trained barber. Having been diagnosed with a long-term hair loss condition some years beforehand, Fleur’s project LOVED. LOCKS. LOST is an exploration of the beauty, pain and tactility behind the process of losing one’s hair, blurring the lines between couture fashion accessories and costume pieces.
Based on psychologist Elizabeth Kübler Ross’ model of grief, the collection examines three of its stages: denial, bargaining and acceptance. The aim of this series of works is to demonstrate both the emotional and psychological journey of a young woman suffering from hair loss, and to capture the beauty in acceptance of your truest form, especially when considering how widely hair is regarded as a benchmark of femininity.
By using physically demanding crafting techniques of crochet, embroidery and embellishment; alongside the utilisation of unconventional materials, such as real human hair, the contextual element of the story comes to life, and spans beyond the realms of traditional knitwear design, almost into a craft and artistry of its own. By using photographs as a foundation to collage upon, via hand-stitching and embroidery, Scott was able to map out the placement and makeup of each headpiece, which in their own right, are pieces of textile art.
