EDITORIAL: Jon Jacobsen directs a hairy beauty editorial through his webcam with fibrous makeup looks by Estudio Gasic Monaco

Photography: Jon Jacobsen + Javiera Allende
Hair + Makeup: Estudio Gasic Monaco
Model: Milla Kemp at WLM Chile

Estudio Gasic Mónaco: As a creative duo, we wanted to explore the different results that crepe wool would give us. This material is utilised for hair and fantasy pieces, but we noticed that depending on how we manipulated its original pattern, the material would provide a variety of colours, intensities and volume to play with. We believe that working with unconventional tools as makeup is the new language of beauty.

Jon Jacobsen: This was my first zoom photoshoot having a full team of professionals overseas. Somehow the idea of directing this through a webcam felt cinematic and I decided to follow that direction. I wanted to explore a multi-camera environment so we set up a few cameras around the model to register different angles while she was performing under my direction. I wanted to see how the make up would distort with the glitchy effects of the camera, but I also wanted to have the real textures, so I invited photographer Javiera Allende to give us an extra view of this experience. While I was taking the photos, Javiera was walking around the studio ‘stealing’ the shots, providing a witness perspective on this beauty editorial.

The model reminded me a lot of Nouvelle Vague cinema, and I thought it was interesting to have this rule-breaking style from the 50s as a reference to what is our actual ‘new wave’; exploring beauty from different remote devices since our current context has challenged us.
