Eszter Magyar is the creative behind @makeupbrutalism, the Instagram page dubbed ’the most hated beauty account since 2018’. A tagline born out of the reactions her extreme makeup looks tend to provoke, Magyar’s subversive approach has nonetheless gained her legions of fans who regularly check in to admire her unique creations. Crafted by and modelled on herself, Magyar’s images verge from the provocative to the downright painful (neon-soaked eyeball anyone?). Her latest work considers the ethics behind the methods and potions we use to beautify ourselves. From eyelashes smothered in foundation to teeth dripping with lipgloss, Magyar’s visuals focus on excess within the beauty industry, and “how new trends on social media are based on massive product waste. I take these ‘habits’ out of their own context and showcase them as independent ideas.”

Magyar created a mini hair series exclusively for us. “I was thinking about something I’d heard about eyelash extensions made from real hair. These are my custom made human hair eyelash extensions, created out of my girlfriend’s hair.”
