EDITORIAL: R&D studio X-presion turn their hand to a traditional painting technique to create optical illusions on hair

Trampantojo/Trompe L’oeil is the latest release from Madrid-based R&D studio X-presion. Consisting of hairdressers Jorge Cancer, José Luis Almendral and Marco Antonio Restrepo, the trio continue to push the visual possibilities of hair by combining unexpected techniques, as previously demonstrated by their creation of viral hair colouring trend #xpresionpixel.

For their latest venture they have turned their eye to the traditional art technique of Trompe l’oeil. A French phrase meaning “to deceive the eye”, the term was first coined in the late 1800s and refers to a method of highly realistic painting to create the illusion of depth, making a flat surface appear 3D. A popular technique enlisted by artists throughout history to transform furniture, ceilings, decorative items and building facades, X-presion’s latest series proves that when the concept is applied to hair, the results are endlessly satisfying.

“This colour technique tricks the eye into thinking that some of the colours are placed deeper into the hair than others, and even simulates cuts from scissors on some of the colour lines”
